Inside the Ambulance: Brown Bob behind W sister series

W will enter the emergency department through the perspective of its most newly-qualified staff, in a ten-part series from Brown Bob Productions.

Emergency Department: First Time Medics is set at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, following junior doctors as they start their year-long placement on the NHS frontline.

Each hour-long episode will follow two or three shifts in real-time, giving insights into the doctors’ relationships with their patients and an understanding of how it feels to work as a junior doctor.

Ordered by commissioning executive Emile Nawagamuwa, deputy director of commissioning Hilary Rosen and channel director Adam Collings, Nawagamuwa said that it was “a real privilege to be able to share the experience of this team”.

“Brown Bob will bring heart and soul to this series and give viewers the chance to meet some of the extraordinary young people who have taken on the responsibility of dealing with the nation’s emergencies every day.”

Brown Bob’s chief exec Jacqueline Hewer added that the emergency department is “one of the most challenging environments in the NHS, and this is the perfect opportunity to show the reality faced by a new generation of doctors”.

Rob Dersley will act as executive producer.

The indie, which also creates W’s Inside the Ambulance and Inside the Vets, has also landed a fourth series of The Architecture the Railways Built last week for fellow UKTV channel Yesterday.

Also in ten-parts, the Tim Dunn-led series will celebrate feats of construction ranging from London Bridge to the Knaresborough Viaduct. Its third series launched to a consolidated audience of 337,000 (1.7%), making it one of the channel’s most successful series.

Since unveiling its free to air move, the female-skewing factual entertainment channel W has also ordered The Beauty Rewind clinic from Whisper and Wedding Valley, set in Lancashire’s Ribble Valley from Little Gem. These commissions join a slate which includes Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over, Emma Willis Delivering Babies.
