Prime Video has ordered a second series of Carrie, with Mike Flanagan again at the helm as showrunner and exec producer.

The first series, which landed on the streamer earlier this month, is a modern reimagining of the 1974 debut horror novel by Stephen King, who will also return as exec producer.

The eight-part first series, starring Summer H. Howell as misfit Carrie White and Samantha Sloyan as her overprotective mother Margaret White, hit number one on Prime Video in over 105 countries worldwide.

The series revealed the social media pressures and cruelty that shaped Carrie, cultimating at the high school prom. But rather than following the tragic end of King’s novel, it leaves the story open for series two, which will unveil new revelations and shocking twists.

Series one reached 702,000 UK viewers in its first seven days, after landing on 7 October, according to Barb data for overnights.tv.

Head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios Peter Friedlander said: “Carrie is connecting with both longtime Stephen King fans and a new generation altogether –including young adults and international audiences, with particular strength among female viewers.

“It speaks to the enduring power of this story and signals that Mike Flanagan’s reimagining of the iconic IP has real breadth. We’re excited by where he and Stephen plan to take the story.”

Flanagan said: “For 50 years, audiences have known and gravitated to Carrie White’s story. From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom, and I’m incredibly grateful for Stephen’s trust and support in exploring what comes next.”

King added: “I can’t wait for audiences to get to see what’s down the road for Carrie White. Mike Flanagan and I are excited about what comes next. It’s bound to be thrilling.”

The Amazon MGM Studios production is written and exec produced by showrunner Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House). Flanagan will also serve as director with Kate Siegel, Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick and Hiromi Kamata.
