Works up Julie Plec’s We Were Liars

Amazon Prime Video is developing Universal Television’s thriller We Were Liars, from The Vampire Diaries writer Julie Plec.

The series is based on E. Lockhart’s New York Times’ bestselling novel of the same name and is billed as a tragic love story and an amnesia thriller, set on a privately owned island off the coast of Massachusetts.

It focuses on the wealthy Sinclair family who spend every summer on their island and explores the aftermath of an incident which happens to family member Cadence during the fifteenth summer, triggered by her remembrance of events two years later.

Plec is attached to write and exec produce the series through her label My So-Called Company, which is currently in ‘mini-room’ status – a new process which is beginning to replace traditional pilot development.

Roswell: New Mexico’s Carina Adly MacKenzie will also write and exec produce, with My So-Called Company’s Emily Cummins and Lockhart serving as non-writing exec producers. Plec will write the first episode and MacKenzie will write episode two.

The series was announced by Universal Television president Erin Underhill at Content London.

It is the latest high-profile streamer project to emerge out of Universal Television alongside its hotly-anticipated Peacock procedural Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne. The studio is behind Netflix comedy Russian Doll, also starring Lyonne.
