The BBC has awarded Arqiva a contract to provide infrastructure for the Freesat digital satellite TV service that will launch in March 2008.

Arqiva, the media infrastructure and distribution company, will provide the BBC with an 'end-to-end solution' for the carriage of the Freesat signal.

To back this up, Arqiva will implement multiple circuits between key teleports in Bedford and Crawley Court in Hampshire and the BBC broadcast centres in London.

Freesat is a Freeview-style joint venture between the BBC and ITV that will offer around 200 free-to-air standard and high-definition channels via satellite when it launches next spring.

Digital boxes will initially be provided by Alba, Humax, Panasonicand Sagem.

The project was given formal approval by the BBC Trust in April this year.
