Arri Rental has unveiled the Alexa 65, a large-format digital camera that can capture an uncompressed ArriRaw 65mm image.

The “scaled-up version of an Alexa XT”, which will only be available through Arri’s rental facilities, has a sensor that is larger than 5-perf 65mm film frame.

Arri said the camera “harks back to the golden age of 65 mm widescreen filmmaking in the mid-20th century, when this newly introduced format captured the imagination of cinema audiences around the world.

“65 mm grew into an inspirational format, providing an epic frame within which the biggest and most visually impactful stories could be told”.

The camera has an Arri A3X CMos sensor with a maximum resolution of 6560 x 3102.

A range of 65 mm prime and zoom lenses using Hasselblad optics has also been launched, including 50-110 mm Zoom 65 and the eight Prime 65 lenses, ranging from 24 mm to 300 mm in lens barrels co-developed with IB/E Optics.

Arri Rental has also teamed up with Codex on the Alexa 65’s workflow, developing the Vault S and the Vault XL.
