BBC Post Production has spent nearly£750,000 on a new HD finishing system, including kit from Quantel, writes Will Strauss.

The new EQ set-up plus monitors, which will allow BBC Resources to colour grade, up-convert and generally finish both in-house BBC HD programmes and jobs from external clients will be delivered this week and be operational within days.

Speaking to Broadcast at the HD conference, BBC post-production head of capital development Andy King said: "The BBC has always had a cautious approach to buying HD kit. But we have recently secured a deal to produce an HD version of Blue Planet for the Discovery HD Theatre channel and this proves to us that there is a market for good HD content."

BBC Post Production already has a Discreet HD Fire and an Alchemist Platinum HD converter. It also recently bought both an HD Shadow telecine machine and upgraded its Spirit TK to a Spirit HD. In total, the post wing of BBC Resources has spent almost£1.5m on HD kit in the past two years.
