The Sentinels

The BBC has picked up the exclusive UK rights to French-language superhero drama The Sentinels.

StudioCanal struck the deal with the UK broadcaster for the Canal+ original, produced by Federation Studios France and Esprits Frappeurs.

The title will premiere in the UK exclusively on iPlayer and BBC4 later this year, having already sold to more than 60 territories worldwide.

Created by Guillaume Lemans in collaboration with Xabi Molia, the eight parter is based on the comic book series Les Sentinelles by Xavier Dorison and Enrique Breccia.

Set at the outbreak of WWI, it follows a severely wounded soldier who is selected for the French army’s secret research programme to create a new breed of combatant. Given superhuman abilities, he joins an elite unit of augmented soldiers known as the Sentinels.

Last year, the drama marked the group’s first multi-continental launch, being simultaneously released on Canal+ across over 30 countries in Europe, Africa and Asia.

It has also aired in Australia (SBS), Belgium (BeTV), Benelux (Play Media), Germany (ProSieben), Canada (TV5), Denmark (DR), Greece (NOVA), Portugal (NOS), Spain (Disney) and Turkey (Tivibu).

The title is written by Guillaume Lemans, Xabi Molia and Raphaëlle Richet, and directed by Thierry Poiraud and Édouard Salier. The producers are Lionel Uzan and Thierry Sorel for Federation Studio France, and Delphine Clot and Guillaume Lemans for Esprits Frappeurs.

Previous recent French drama acquisitions by the BBC include Federation Studios sibling Sambre – Anatomy of a Crime, which the corporation picked up in 2024.
