BBC Storyville’s One in a Million has been selected for the World Cinema Documentary category at the Sundance Film Festival.

The 90-minute documentary was co-produced by BBC Storyville, Keo Films and Frontline Features, and was filmed over the course of 10 years. It follows a young Syrian girl and her family as they travel across Eastern Europe to seek refuge in Germany.

Directed by Itab Azzam and Jack MacInnes, the film documents the complexities of the refugee experience and the challenges of cultural integration. It culminates in a return to Syria following the collapse of the Assad regime earlier this year.

Executive producer Raney Aronson-Rath said: “Itab and Jack’s decade-long commitment to following this story offers viewers a rare perspective on what it’s like to grow up as a refugee, and we look forward to sharing this film with audiences soon.”

This is the second year in a row that a Storyville film has been selected for Sundance, where the film will have its world premiere in January. Storyville-backed Mr Nobody Against Putin and Khartoum were both listed for the festival last year.

The UK is well-represented in the documentary category this year, with three other UK produced or co-produced films also on the programme.

Birds of War (Sonja Henrici Creates / Habak Films), Everybody to Kenmure Street (Barry Crerar), and Hanging by a Wire (EverWonder Studio / Mindhouse Productions) join One in a Million on the bill.
