‘A stunning experience that could have a truly significant role to play in learning and education’

Over the course of a month, 10,000 members of the public experienced augmented reality, the natural world and a positive ecological message via this groundbreaking project.

Inspired by BBC One’s landmark series The Green Planet, the experience used 5G technology to bring scientifically accurate animated 3D plants, animals and landscapes into a building on London’s Piccadilly Circus.

The content was delivered via mobile phones in real-time, as visitors to the sold-out experience were treated to a personal tour of six immersive, and interconnected, biomes by a hologram of Sir David Attenborough.

Unity game design, haptics and spatial audio were merged with a custom-made augmented reality app to allow visitors to plant a giant of the rainforest, become a woodpecker, re-wild Regent Street – or even become an oceanic current.

The partners collaborated with sustainable events body Isla to ensure that it was delivered in as green a way as possible, using innovative technologies including eco-textiles and PET plastic bottles.

Among the fans were Stephen Fry, who labelled it a “stunning experience” that “could have a truly significant role to play in learning and education”.
