Disney+ in the UK has picked up rights to See-Saw Films’ upcoming Australian legal comedy-drama The Great White, which marks actor and filmmaker Mia Wasikowska’s TV directing debut.

The 6 x 60-minute series was unveiled in October ahead of Mipcom and was originated and developed by Samantha Lang and created by Ange Betzien, who writes alongside Nick Coyle and Andrew Anastasios.

It was greenlit by the ABC in Oz, with Wasikowska directing alongside Nash Edgerton, and Hugo Weaving starring. Production started in Sydney on 9 June and runs until 21 August.

The show, which is being sold by the sales arm of See Saw owner Mediawan with the participation of Entourage Ventures, tracks a brilliant but disgraced lawyer who must act for a dog on death row as he looks to revive his life.

Mediawan said a sale to a “major German broadcaster” would also be announced shortly.

“The alchemy of See-Saw’s outstanding creative track record, Hugo Weaving’s lead casting and a brilliantly original feel-good concept created the momentum that led to the acquisition in the UK,” said Mediawan Rights’ chief exdec Sally Habbershaw.

“The commitment of Disney+ is a tremendous asset for the series, and we look forward to building further momentum around the project in the international market.”

Alongside Weaving, the cast includes Eamon Farren, Arlo Green, Sacha Horler, Dinasha Perera, Brigid Zengeni, Miranda Otto, James Majoos and Emily Barlcay.

Executive producers also include Liz Watts, Emile Sherman, Iain Canning, Helen Gregory and Hugo Weaving.

The series is co-executive produced by Alyssa McClelland and Simon Gillis, produced by Angela Littlejohn and co-produced by Libby Sharpe. The ABC executive producer is Rachel Okine.

Mediawan has been looking to expand its drama capabilities over recent years, as content chief Elisabeth d’Arvieu told Broadcast International earlier this year. As part of that move, sales arm Mediawan Rights has been looking to invest at increasingly early stages to support production and secure distribution rights, with upcoming shows including California Avenue from Hugo Blick.
