Phone hacking drama will air in 50 countries including France, Finland and New Zealand

Phone hacking drama The Hack has sold around the world ahead of its launch on ITV1 today (24 September).

The seven-part series, which is penned by Jack Thorne and Annalisa Dinnella (Ralph & Katie, Sex Education) and stars David Tenant as campaigning journalist Nick Davies, has been acquired by Arte in French and German-speaking countries, YLE in Finland, SVT in Sweden, NRK in Norway, DR in Denmark and Cosmote TV Greece across Europe.

Elsewhere, TVNZ in New Zealand has picked up the series, while Lionsgate Play and BBC Studios have taken it in pan-regional deals spanning seven and 25 countries, respectively, across South Asia and CEE.

The series, which hails from the creative team behind Mr Bates vs The Post Office is produced by ITV Studios, AC Chapter One and One Shoe Films in co-production with Australia streamer Stan. It will premiere tonight on ITV1 and Stan.

The story interweaves the two real-life stories of the investigative Guardian journalist Davies, who uncovered evidence of phone hacking at News of the World, and the parallel investigation into the unsolved murder of Daniel Morgan, led by Met Police senior detective Dave Cook, played by Robert Carlyle.

Toby Jones also stars as The Guardian’s editor-in-chief, Alan Rusbridger. The Hack is directed by Lewis Arnold and exec produced by Patrick Spence, the managing director of AC Chapter One.

Thorne also exec produces the drama alongside Joe Williams for ITV Studios. Abi Bach served as the series producer.

ITV Studios is the producer and co-financier of the drama and distributes the series internationally.
