Film/TV studios developer Quartermaster is to open two new television studios in the UK

The studios will service the growth in demand for new content and the UK’s world-class creative industry. Designed for TV and high-end drama production, the facilities are located in London and Birmingham. The studios in Stratford, London, will be open from summer 2021 and the Birmingham City University studios from winter 2022, with the potential for temporary space to be available in Birmingham next summer, subject to demand.

Quartermaster is also progressing separate dedicated film studio developments within the M25 area, totalling more than 1,300,000 sq ft of media space. Development on these will begin in 2021, with the potential for 300,000 sq ft of space, including stages, workshops and production offices, available from late 2021.

World-class facilities

Quartermaster is backed by New York-based Bateleur Capital, which has embraced its vision for high-quality studio spaces in the UK.

Quartermaster co-founder and chief executive Katya Baker says: “It’s been a long and intense journey, but our ambition is now nearing realisation. Quartermaster’s vision is to deliver world-class, technologically advanced studio spaces to address the long-standing deficiencies in the quality and availability of facilities here in the UK.

“Equally, we are passionate about developing the next generation of production talent, promoting workplace diversity and higher-paid employment opportunities through our strong ties to educational institutions.

“These studios are strategically located in London and Birmingham. They are complementary to each other and both sit within a diverse, vibrant and young community. Their locations are accessible and both regions have a multi-skilled workforce to ensure sourcing and retention of crews and talent alike.

“With current journey times of one hour between London and Birmingham by train, our studios are ideally located for broadcasters to meet Ofcom’s regional production quotas.”

STRATFORD, LONDON

Stratford in the east of London is an established media and cultural hub, and the studios are located within easy reach of two major stations and amenities, including Stratford International.

The Quartermaster studio facilities will total 146,000 sq ft, consisting of five circa 10,000 sq ft studios (each of which can be divided and fully configurable to accommodate multiple sets) plus two 1,000 sq ft green-screen studios.

The two ground-floor studios have retractable audience seating, and each studio has a dedicated gallery, sound and light control rooms, dressing rooms and production offices.

A restaurant, bar, external deck areas and internal audience handling areas are also built into the designs to provide a full-service, high-specification working environment situated within the broader, fully connected, culturally rich creative campus.

BIRMINGHAM CITY UNIVERSITY

In a joint-venture with Birmingham City University, Quartermaster is advancing the construction of a new nine-storey media centre, situated in Birmingham. It is part of a £360m 10-year redevelopment programme by the university.

Located adjacent to the forthcoming Curzon Street HS2 station, and a short walk from the existing Moor Street station, these studios complement the university’s existing media studies offering.

The campus is one of the most ambitious and prestigious city centre developments, with a clear focus on becoming the Midlands’ definitive creative and cultural hub.

Spanning 225,000 sq ft, the building will incorporate four studios designed for TV and drama – two 5,600 sq ft spaces, as well as a 8,200 sq ft and 10,333 sq ft studio space – plus commercial and event spaces.
