GlobalData (Broadcast Sport’s parent company) is running a free-to-attend online event, Battle for Live Sports: Sports Viewing in the Streaming Age, on Thursday 22 May.

The seminar is focused on the recent move by streamers to include more live events and sports coverage into their product offering.

With streamers now bidding for sports rights more than ever, GlobalData’s expect analysts will discuss the implications of this for the sports sector, and how the sports broadcasting landscape is changing rapidly as a result of the streamers.

Netflix’s debut into live events with Jake Paul and Mike Tyson’s fight brought in 108 million viewers, following the footsteps of streaming-sports leader Amazon Prime, which in 2024 signed an 11-year agreement with the NBA and is also airing the NFL Thursday Night Football until 2033, with a reported value of US$1bn per year. Disney’s sports service is also keeping apace, with its UFC-ESPN deal recently coming to a close.

Meanwhile, GlobalData’s sports engagement survey revealed that 65% of sports fans subscribe to a specific streaming or Pay TV service to gain access to exclusive sports content, and amongst these, intention to cancel is low.

However, over 60% also say they would cancel sport subscriptions to keep general entertainment services, indicative of a strong appetite for platforms that can offer both.

Subscriptions that can create high-value deals will see more retention and are better equipped to navigate trickier times.
