Sylver Entertainment produced documentary in collaboration with Starfield Films and Pitch Productions

England men's cricket world cup win

Sky will air The Greatest Game, a film on England’s 2019 Cricket World Cup final victory, this weekend.

It will be shown at midday on Saturday and 8pm on Sunday on Sky Sports Cricket, before again being broadcast next weekend. It is on at 5pm on Sunday and 9pm on Monday on Sky Documentaries.

Starfield Films co-founder and former cricketer Simon Hughes is executive producer and co-wrote the film with fellow co-founder and director Ashley Gething (Universe, Civilizations, Diana Our Mother), with Sylver’s Victoria Barrell and Simon Lazenby (McEnroe) as producers. Pitch is co-producer and also handling worldwide sales.

Owen Davies (I Believe in Miracles, The Three Kings, Don’t Take Me Home) edits, with Lorne Balfe (Top Gun Maverick, The Crown) scoring the film’s soundtrack and sound design provided by BAFTA winning George Foulgham (Man on Wire, The White Helmets).

The 90-minute documentary includes insight and first-person accounts from every member of the England team that brought the men’s trophy home for the first time in history.

Jonathan Rogers, COO, Pitch International, said: “We have been really pleased with the reaction to the film and welcome Sky as the UK and Ireland broadcaster.  We have a number of exciting international deals to announce and look forward to a global audience reliving the agony and ecstasy of the super over!”

Barrell and Lazenby added: “We’re proud to partner with Starfield and Pitch on this powerful ode to the triumphant cricket world cup team of 2019. At a time when Britain had experienced great division over Brexit and public discourse was strained, this incredible team came together, from all corners of our country and with nail biting drama- clinched the cricket world cup. This film celebrates their remarkable achievement, whilst revealing their individual stories, and ultimately reminding us all of the true unity of sport.”

Gething commented: “The 2019 World Cup Final was – by common consent - the greatest game of cricket every played.  Our ambition was to make a film which would reveal the intensity, and brilliant unpredictability of cricket. The Greatest Game is our tribute to the players on both sides who gave the world one of the greatest sporting finals ever witnessed.”
