BSkyB is spending£5m with Sony on establishing its high definition facility in west London.

The£5m investment covers equipment, installation and training costs, making Sony the prime contractor in the creation of new studios at the broadcaster's Isleworth headquarters.

Sky is launching an HD service next year, which is expected to include a sport and film package.

The new studios will use Sony HD equipment including HDC-15000 studio cameras and more than 60 HDCam and HDCam SR format VTRs, as well as switchers and monitors.

BSkyB is also using US company Harris for its HD automated playout and Tandberg Television for its HD video encoding and distribution systems.

Sony was unable to confirm a completion date but its high-definition cameras are not expected to be available until October this year.
