John McVay: government thesis that bigger is better is an archaic concept

Pact has warned that privatising Channel 4 will “damage” small businesses as they attempt to recover from the impact of the pandemic.

Chief exec John McVay said he is “very concerned” about the proposals, which were unveiled this morning, and urged the government to focus on “building back better” in the wake of Covid-19.

Defending C4’s current model, he said it is a “thriving and successful PSB” that acts as a “catalyst for generations of entrepreneurs”.

Last year C4 worked with 274 producers, 161 of those were independent producers, and spent £370m on original content.

“Channel 4 plays a critical role in the UK’s broadcasting ecology as a publisher/broadcaster which has invested in hundreds of independent production companies over the nearly 40 years of its existence, enabling and improving access, skills, international activity and diversity,” he added.

“The government’s thesis that bigger is always better is an archaic concept from an analogue past.”
