Vue has signed a deal with Sony Europe to install 4k digital cinema projection systems across its UK sites.

The cinema chain said it will enable it to screen more live 2D and 3D sports and arts events and more 3D films.

Chief executive of Vue Entertainment Tim Richards said: “The transition to all digital screens heralds a new era for cinema offering greater choice not only of films but it also allow us to expand our range of live and recorded 3D and 2D content covering sports, music, opera, ballet, theatre, comedy gaming and other major special events.”

Last week, selected Vue cinemas screened Lucrezia Borgia, the first TX of live 3D opera, which was also shown live on Sky Arts and Sky 3D.

Vue and Sony said the conversion process is expected to take 18 months to complete.
