Start-up Digilab London is the latest company to launch a dedicated service offering to oversee tapeless shoots and deal with footage right through pre, production and post-production.

Digi-Lab's service will include shoot attend, digital dailies, raw conversions and data back-up and follows similar recent launches by the likes of Pepper, On Sight, Axis Films and The Mill.

Based in Hampshire but operating a mobile unit on location, DigiLab is owned and run by five partners with experience in digital cinematography, post-production and data management.

They include former Softimage, Discreet and 5D executive Marc Dando, James Eggleton, who joins from Axis Films, and Kevin Selway, a leading video assist specialist in commercials.

“It became obvious that the missing link in high-end digital production is the role of the photochemical lab for data,” said Digilab marketing director and ex-5D and Avid executive Miguel Ferros.

“A producer and director should only have to decide which digital workflow will work for the production creatively and financially. They should not have to concern themselves with looking after data. They need the assurance that they have specialists on-set that look after the data capture and, when it comes to post, ensure that the shots and metadata are in the right place, at the right time and in the right format.”

The company is currently working on two features and a stereoscopic 3D wildlife documentary in Africa for broadcast. Its kit includes a Codex high-resolution digital media recorder and its data capture and processing system is for Silicon Imaging 2K cameras.
