Sky, Discovery and Turner have signed up to trial live mobile phone broadcasts from September.

NTL Broadcast is due to run the six month project in Oxford from the end of the summer. It will allow 350 specially equipped mobile phone users to watch mainstream channels on the move.

Eight of the sixteen channels within the trial have been confirmed. They are Sky News, Sky Sports News, Sky Travel, Chart Show TV, Discovery Channel, CNN and Cartoon Network and short film channel Shorts TV.

The test project will use the new widescreen Nokia 7710, a next generation smart phone, on the O2 network. The phones will be equipped with a special DVB-H receiver that will pick up signals from a local network of eight transmitters, currently being built.

Terry Howard, head of media business development at NTL Broadcast, said: 'This trial will give a useful insight into how the new technology performs, and we intend to use that information to inform the broadcasters, mobile operators and Ofcom about the consumer appeal of the service.'
