Camera rental specialist 24-7 Drama has taken stock of five units of Sony’s newly improved HDCAM SR shooter, the SRW-9000.

The hire company, part of the Visual Impact group, is planning on using the camera on high end film and drama productions.

It’s the largest order of the product so far from a UK hire company since the manufacturer announced an accessible  upgrade path for its users last November.

Sony’s ‘camera for life’ pledge’  includes the ability to add a 35mm size sensor, which is due next year, and file based recording using a one terabyte recording pack, which is expected by 2011.

According to Sony’s general manager for UK media and broadcaster Mark Bainbridge, the hire company has already made plans  to migrate three of the camera systems to the 35mm sensor.

Sony is targeting the camera at high end dramas, commercials and natural history productions,  A fully configured version of the system currently retails for approximately £75,000.
