Two former directors of Manchester-based design and graphics companies have joined forces to open a new CGI and visual effects studio.

Andrew Lord, previously business development director at RealtimeUK, and Ben Haworth, the former studio head and creative director at Smoothe’s Manchester office launched Flipbook last week.

The company’s focus will be on partnering with digital, advertising and design agencies, producers and video games studios to produce digital content and animations.

It will specialise in TV commercials, visual effects, title sequences, idents, promos, print campaigns and re-purposing assets for interactive online ads.

The duo previously worked together at effects facility Red Vision.

“We’ve set-up with a focus on partnering and collaborative working in order to create more unique and rounded CG solutions,” explained Lord.

“In a way, as well as building our own portfolio of work, we intend to act as agents who’ll bring more CGI and motion graphics work to Manchester and the North by creating a collaborative working environment in the city similar to the post houses in Soho.”

“A large number of ad-agencies in the North still go down to Soho to get their CGI and VFX done, which is a crying shame considering the talent that exists up North. Most of the agencies I’ve spoken to do this because they are simply not aware of the quality resource right here on their doorstep.”

As well as partnering with other companies, Flipbook will use a roster of freelance artists and developers and will be based in Manchester city centre.

3ds Max, Maya, Fusion, Photoshop, After Effects, Smoke and Final Cut pro will be the tools of choice.

Haworth’s credits include effects work on Touching the Void (pictured).
