More than 70% of UK households will be watching HD channels by 2016, according to figures from Informa.

HD penetration in the UK will hit 72% in five years’ time, up from 38% this year.

Although the UK was “ahead of the game”, it lagged behind global leader the US, which is expected to reach 91% by 2016, said Informa media research manager Adam Thomas.

Greater penetration of HD programming raises the prospect of a second wave of switchovers as HD becomes the standard.

“The extra capacity freed up by such a move would then raise the possibility of another generation of Super HD, which would offer an enhancement to what will have then become standard HD,” Thomas added.
