National Geographic is launching a high-definition version of its US channel NGC in early 2006.

NGC has teamed up with its parent company Fox Cable Networks, a 67% shareholder, for the launch, which will see more than 90 % of primetime programmes broadcast in HD.

Almost all of National Geographic Channel's programme production is currently made in HD and it has also been increasing its HD acquisitions.

Laureen Ong, the president of the National Geographic Channel said, "This is a natural progression for our brand and our network, and we anticipate NGC HD becoming very resonant with our core viewers."

In 2002 the launch of Discovery HD Theater made Discovery Communications one of the first media companies in the US to launch a 24 hour high definition channel.
