Six-part Copenhagen Cowboy is billed as a “poetic thrill-inducing series”

Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn is returning to his neo-noir heartland with Danish Netflix series Copenhagen Cowboy.

The six-part series follows young heroine Miu (Angela Budalovic) as she navigates the Danish capital’s criminal underworld.

Lola Corfixen and Zlatko Buric star alongside Bundalovic, with additional cast including Andreas Lykke Jørgensen, Jason Hendil-Forssell, Li Ii Zhang, Dragana Milutinovic, Mikael Bertelsen and Mads Brügger.

Copenhagen native Winding Redn is the creator and director of the series, which is produced through his label NWR Originals. Sara Isabella Jønsson, Johanne Algren and Mona Masri are the writing team behind it, with Lene Børglum and Christina Erritzøe.

Winding Refn is known for his dark, neon-infused features, particularly his Ryan Gosling films Drive and Only God Forgives and the Amazon crime drama miniseries Too Old to Die Young.

“With Copenhagen Cowboy, I am returning to my past to shape my future by creating a series, an expansion of my constantly evolving alter-egos, now in the form of my young heroine, Miu,” Winding Refn said.

“Collaborating with Netflix and bringing this show to life has been an absolutely wonderful experience on all levels. I not only perceive them as my partners with many future adventures to come, but also as my friends. The new term has been born: Netflix Winding Refn.”

Jenny Stjernströmer Björk, director of Nordic original series at Netflix, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to finally be able to announce that we have partnered up with Nicolas Winding Refn, one of Denmark’s most acclaimed filmmakers, and are bringing him back to Denmark to produce a local Danish show after more than 15 years abroad.

“Nicolas is a creative force and is such a fascinating and unpredictable filmmaker. We can’t wait to bring Copenhagen Cowboy to the world.”

The series comes two days after co-chief Ted Sarandos emphasised Netflix has “to really focus on working tightly with [creatives], the most important decision in the output of great content is the creative you’re working with”.
