Ofcom has published its latest proposals for how spectrum freed up by the switch to digital television might be used and when and how it will be released

The 128MHz of cleared spectrum will become available by late 2012.

It is likely to be sold off in lots of 5MHz and 8MHz with a cap of 50 MHz for any one bidder.

Ofcom said that its objective is to maximise the total value to society: “It is not our objective to raise revenue for the Exchequer, nor is this a consideration that we can take into account, given our statutory duties.”

Ofcom plans to auction the spectrum in summer 2009.
