‘His hosting of the Euros really showed the journey he has come on as a presenter’

UEFA Euro 2020 and Six Nations Rugby for ITV

The “highest quality of journalism” was how our judges described the work of Mark Pougatch, who was central to ITV’s coverage of UEFA Euro 2020 and the Six Nations Rugby.

The former BBC Radio 5 Live presenter, who has been ITV’s main football and rugby presenter since 2015, not only had to make its Euros coverage insightful and informative for seasoned football fans but also inclusive and entertaining for casual viewers.

Over the course of the four weeks, Pougatch’s full range as a presenter was on display. He showed gravitas when dealing with serious news stories such as Christian Eriksen’s on-field heart attack, and the crowd trouble that preceded the final. But he also provided lighter moments, deftly handling a studio chat at Wembley while 60,000 fans sang choruses of Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline.

“His presentation of the Euros was outstanding and really showed the journey he has come on as a presenter,” said one judge. “Holding both the audience and the in-studio guests is not easy, but he always kept everything flowing.”

“First class,” said another. “He had huge obstacles to overcome under immense pressure, including presenting at an ear-bursting Wembley.”

Pougatch consistently hits the right tone editorially, entertaining and informing the viewer while getting the best out of those around him.
