The facility, which as provided high-end special effects for broadcast, film and advertising most recently for BBC's Doctor Who, has drafted in investment bank Long Acre Partners to seek a new investor.

Venture capitalist company 3i took a £10m equity stake in the company in 2001 to back a management buyout - worth around £24m - by The Mill's management team of Robin Shenfield, Pat Joseph and James Morris.

A spokesman from The Mill said 3i's withdrawal this year had always been on the cards and was planned for the end of this summer.
