“The McEnroe-Connors antipathy was driven as much by the similarities of character they both identified as their professional rivalry. You sense that they still don’t really like each other. Both have time for Borg and neither has much time for Ivan Lendl, the robotic Czech who eventually blew them away just at the time the Terminator films came out (comparisons were indeed drawn at the time). At times this series feels like an ATP corporate video but it cannot help being fascinating. Achieving greatness, the passing of time, the death of a monarch and the cry of “long live the king” as the predecessor is consigned to history is a story as old as recorded time.”

“I mean this quite seriously; it is time to start commissioning programmes about good men. We need a steady, regular inoculation against despair. If deep dives into the lives of male celebrities past and present can yield enough unblemished records for a series, I’ll be surprised but delighted. If not, maybe we can ask the public to nominate “ordinary” men, like a version of the Pride of Britain awards. Channel 4, call me.”
