NAB 2013: Canon has expanded its range of handheld video cameras with the launch of three new compact models.

The XA25 (pictured) and XA20 contain a new imaging system with pro audio and Wi-Fi connectivity.

The Legria HF G30 has the same imaging system but is aimed at “enthusiast videographers”, such as hobbyists or film students.

Canon said the cameras’ HD video system had been redesigned from the lens through to the image sensor and processor.

A 20x zoom wide-angle lens offers a 26.8–576mm focal range and uses optical technology found in Canon’s XF305 camcorder.

A three-mode optical image stabiliser has a dynamic mode to reduce the effects of camera movement during shooting.

Canon also said an 8-blade circular aperture provides enhanced bokeh, using Canon’s Electro Magnetic Diaphragm technology which was developed for the company’s EF range of lenses.

The cameras also contain a newly-designed 1/2.84-type 2.91 megapixel HD CMOS sensor.

Recording formats include AVCHD up to 28Mbps and MP4 up to 35Mbps.

Video is recorded to dual SD card slots up to 1080/50p.

The XA25 and XA20 feature the same removable handle featured on the Canon XA10.

It houses a controls and XLR inputs for capturing audio from external microphones.

Each camera also features dual band Wi-Fi support for the adjustment of settings via a web browser and the review of footage via a smartphone or tablet.
