Ascent Media Network Services will playout the first Disney branded HD channel, Disney Cinemagic, from its European Transmission Centre (ETC).

Disney Cinemagic HD broadcasts a range of family movies. It is available on satellite, cable and broadband in the UK.

The managing director of Ascent Media's content distribution business, Roger Henderson, said: “Securing this deal with such a renowned global leader in family entertainment broadcasting proves we were right to invest in the European Transmission Centre."

According to World Screen.com, in its first year, Disney Cinemagic HD is expected to broadcast up to 50% of its content in native high definition, with other content being upscaled.

The Disney channel is just one of six new channel playout contracts won by Ascent Media. The full list is:

  • Disney Cinemagic France SD

  • Disney Cinemagic France SD +1

  • Disney Cinemagic France HD

  • Sony Pictures Television International - AXN Germany

  • Sony Pictures Television International - SET Africa

  • Sony Pictures Television International - AXN Sci Fi Russia

These new wins takes the total being broadcast by the ETC to 14.

The ETC, which was launched in March this year, transmits to a global audience in nine languages including German, Russian, Polish and French.

Ascent Media also plays out channels for Info TV.

The ETC is a transmission facility designed to provide content owners with a 'turnkey broadcast solution'. It has a 32-channel capacity. According to Ascent it has more than 99.99% on-air availability as standard.

The ETC brings together technology from key vendors in the following areas: Pro-Bel Morpheus for Automation, Pro-Bel Sirius for SDI/ASI Routers, Omneon Spectrum for Online Video Server, Miranda IS300 for Channel Branding and Graphics, Snell and Wilcox for Infrastructure, Isilon for Network Attached Storage and Screen Polistream for Subtitling.
