The company behind video search engine blinkx.tv is to push into user-generated content with a website that lets users send their videos straight to the site from mobile phones.

Blinkx launches SelfcastTV today (Monday), allowing users to upload video content to the site from their phones which can then be searched and viewed by others.

The company initially set up a function on the main blinkx.tv website allowing users to do this, but when the amount of people doing so increased, they decided to launch a dedicated site for user generated content.

It will be funded by revenue generated by blinkx.tv, but Suranga Chandratillake, founder of SelfcastTV, said the site could adopt an advertising model in the future.

'At the moment, we are committed to fostering the community we have created. We give them the features we think they are after,' Chandratillake said.

As well as allowing consumers to upload their own videos by texting from a mobile phone, the site also allows users to create channels of their favourite clips.

Using a 'movie mode' function, users can watch videos on a full-screen and watch their selected footage in one continuous video.

They can also email video clips to other people or download them onto other platforms, including iPods.
