BBC Studios-owned streamer BritBox has made its latest scripted acquisition, picking up North American rights to Bafta-winning Mr Loverman.

Mr Loverman is from UK-based Sony label Fable Pictures and was the only show to win two categories at this year’s Bafta TV Awards, with Lennie James and Ariyon Bakare triumphing in acting categories for the BBC1 critical hit.

The drama was adapted from Bernardine Evaristo’s bestselling novel by Nathaniel Price and follows a septuagenarian Antiguan-born Hackney man who has been married to his wife for 50 years. When his wife senses he has been cheating on her, little does she know he has been having an affair with his male best friend.

BritBox, which will debut the drama in North America from 4 June, has become a prolific buyer of North American scripted rights over recent months as other US-based streamers have pulled back on international pick-ups.

The streamer has recently added ITV crime drama Protection from All3Media International to its US slate, along with BBC series A Taste For Murder, which is produced by Eagle Eye Drama.

Mr Loverman, which is sold by Sony Pictures Television, joins fellow adaptation Outrageous on BritBox’s June slate, with the series set to debut on 18 June.

It has been created and written by Sarah Williams (Small Island), with the story based on Mary Lovell’s biography The Sisters: The Saga of the Mitford Family. Bessie Carter (Bridgerton) stars.

Other shows making their North American debut on BritBox include Richard Osman’s House of Games, and the second season of The Good Ship Murder.
