What does it take to stay ahead of the game in the global entertainment industry, decade upon decade? Sargent-Disc – the UK’s leading supplier of integrated payroll, residuals, production accounting and workflow software – knows a thing or two about longevity

Every good producer knows that a tightlyrun production accounting department is essential for a successful shoot – and that staff trust, supplier stability and cash flow should be underestimated at your own peril.
For four decades, Sargent-Disc has been helping film and TV productions stay at the top of their game, by supporting these financial engine rooms to run efficiently.
The company’s behind-the-scenes presence has been a constant amid the many shifts – big and small – that have pushed the industry forward since the ’80s; from physical to digital production, from linear broadcasting to a globalised, streaming-first economy.
Such longevity is rare, particularly in an industry constantly reimagining itself in the face of changing financing and distribution models, viewing trends and technological advances – not to mention global events triggering market uncertainty. What does it take to stay ahead of the curve and remain at the forefront of film and TV finance?
From the company’s early days, when founders John and Marija Sargent were among the first adopters of computerised systems, to today’s global operations as a leading technology and production finance business,
Sargent-Disc’s key objectives have remained the same: to lead the way in improving efficiency and accuracy for clients, and to work alongside industry partners to reshape the way production finance operates in a digital future.
Milestones through the decades have ensured an approach that has stayed fresh. Establishing the first online payroll gateway, SD Online, in 2009; being first to introduce cashless payment with SD Production Card in 2011; creating the first full digital workflow platform for production payroll and finance with Digital Production Office® in 2015, with DPO PSL+ integration and APA added to the platform in 2025.
All are examples of how Sargent-Disc has harnessed technology to improve reliability and speed, while providing specialist film and TV payroll expertise of the highest standard.

Sargent-Disc’s 2019 acquisition by EQT company Cast & Crew saw it transition from UK specialist to global production technology provider. It brought together the best international production payroll service with the best production accounting solution, PSL+, and ensured continued investment into proprietary software development to further revolutionise production office processes across payroll, accounting and financial management.
The expansion of the company’s workforce and the volume of its workflow speak to its success. Today Sargent-Disc (a Cast & Crew Company) has 85 employees compared to 25 fifteen years ago. Over the past three years, the production service division alone has managed production and payroll expenditure totalling £1.5bn for international productions made by clients of all sizes, from independent production companies to major studios, streamers and producers.
Alongside operational excellence, the company puts its longevity down to the strong partnerships it has fostered and maintained over decades, which have helped it to consistently adapt and rise to challenges amid an industry that is constantly evolving.
Bringing together clients and colleagues from across the globe at recent anniversary receptions this Summer at Cannes Film Festival, London’s Century Club and at the British Consul General’s residence in LA, directors Dr Laurence Sargent and Lara Sargent have paid tribute to these relationships.
“We’re incredibly grateful for the partnerships, trust and shared experiences that have helped shape our journey over the past four decades,” says Laurence.
“Our vision has always been to combine deep production expertise with innovative software solutions, enabling productions of every scale to operate more efficiently, accurately and in full financial compliance. That same mindset continues to shape what comes next. We remain focused on developing tools and services that keep pace with the demands of a changing industry, for the next 40 years and beyond.
