Component chairman Julian Aston said that the sale of the kit, which includes 25 Avids, to the Pinewood Studios-based hire outfit stemmed from a need to create space to accommodate the post facility's expanding DVD authoring business.
Aston added that the sale did not reflect a drop in demand for Avids and that increasing interest in creative desktops like Final Cut Pro was not a factor.
"FCP is making inroads but most people work on Avids," he said.
Central Rental will continue to focus on camera hire, and Component Graphics will specialise in graphics and DVD authoring.
The hire market has seen another sell-off recently with Hyperactive Broadcast's acquisition of audio hire company SoundStation.
