Dutch public broadcaster VPRO is retracing Charles Darwin’s voyage on the HMS Beagle for a 35-part documentary.

Retracing Charles Darwin’s voyage on the HMS Beagle

To celebrate Darwin’s 200th birthday and the 150th anniversary of his publication ‘On the Origin of Species’ the broadcaster is reconstructing his five-year round-the-world expedition, in one year, and documenting the attempt. The three-mast sailing ship used for the expedition includes a TV studio from which parts of the series are produced and broadcast.

The main challenge was how to broadcast live data via radio, television, and through personal internet journals and video blogs while on board.

By using the Avid ISIS shared storage system, Media Composer and Interplay products, the production team ensured the stable delivery of compressed HD content, through the varied climatic conditions stretching from Patagonia to the South Pacific, Australia to St. Helena.
