The BBC is to expand its eBay-style auction used to select crew and kit hire firms for its preferred suppliers list to the rest of the corporation.

The broadcaster trialled the 'e-auction' in which wet-hire companies are selected through an email tender process to participate in an online auction earlier this year ( Broadcast, 20.4.06). The companies competed to offer the lowest price for their services.

While some bidders complained that the auction lasted around 10 hours instead of the intended 80 minutes, BBC procurement - the department overseeing the auction - insists that it was a success.

The next e-auction, once again managed by e-host Achilles, has been planned for November and will be preceded by an e-tendering process to select participants.
