Ericsson launched Voyager II, its latest digital satellite newsgathering (DSNG) system, this week.

The fifth-generation product offers MPEG-4 AVC 4:2:2 encoding with 10-bit precision at up to 1080p50/60 resolution, as well aslower latency codecs JPEG2000 and AVC-Intra for compatibility with studio file-based workflows.

Ericsson product manager Fabio Murra told Broadcast the demand for high-quality images had “raised the bar” for those responsible for content acquisition.

“Today the requirements are changing. We are driving more HD from venues, as well as SD news and 3D from the same equipment,” he said.

“Voyager II is slimmer, smaller and less power hungry [than its predecessor]. It has been redesigned as a skeleton chassis so that it can evolve with the requirements of the user.”
