The EU has given millions of pounds in funding to a British Telecom project aimed at formulating new ways of creating and viewing media. The New Media for a New Millennium project (NM2) is split across a number of countries, with research shared across technology companies and educational institutions. NM2 aims to create a broadband media genre that will allow viewers to personalise programmes by selecting different versions to watch: a romantic version of Star Wars , for example, or Big Brother with a particular focus on certain participants. Dr Doug Williams, NM2 technical project manager, said: 'In five years we want to have created the rules by which the technologies can understand editing principles so that content can be produced.'
