Pointless co-creator Nick Mather to head up Fremantle Global Originals as executive vice-president
Fremantle has hired a senior exec from Wheelhouse Entertainment to run a newly launched global format label focused on creating original unscripted IP.
Fremantle Global Originals will be headed up by Nick Mather, who co-created formats such as Million Dollar Secrets on Netflix and Got to Get Out on Hulu and Disney.
Mather, who also co-created long-running BBC hit Pointless and cult favourite Golden Balls, joins as executive vice-president from Wheelhouse Entertainment, where he had held the same position.
His new label will act as a creative engine for Fremantle, supplying format ideas to be produced across the group’s global production network.
The label is eyeing up bold, scalable IP that will be created in collaboration with the group’s creative talent and partners. Fremantle added that the launch is part of a strategy to diversify its IP pipeline.
Mather reports into Fremantle UK chief executive Amelia Brown and will also work closely with the group’s global network.
“To combine the creative format leadership of Nick with the production strength of Fremantle’s labels and companies is incredibly exciting,” said Brown.
“It places format creation right at the heart of everything we do at Fremantle and with his wealth of experience across the UK, US and international markets, Nick is perfectly placed to drive bold new ideas with global potential.”
Speaking of his appointment, Mather added: “Fremantle Global Originals is built on a simple idea; if you match motivated, forward-thinking creatives with Fremantle’s towering international infrastructure, you create a uniquely exciting space.”
“Somewhere where creative ambition is matched by a commitment to make big, bold ideas happen. I’m looking forward to taking big swings with big swingers - if I’m allowed to call them that.”
