International Broadcast Facilities (IBF) has invested more than£150,000 to boost its Sony HD capabilities as it predicts a swing from HD-D5 to HDCam SR.

The Covent Garden-based facility has picked up two HDCam decks and one of the newly launched HDCam SR decks - believed to be the second one purchased in the UK after neighbour Pepper Post ordered the first in April. The VTRs, which cost£157,000, and were delivered earlier this week after the order was confirmed at the Broadcast Production Show.

Sales and marketing manager Tom Bird said: "We know that various people are switching from HD-D5 to HDCam SR and so we have to respond to that. It may or may not be a better quality format, but it's certainly seen as being more stable."

IBF is also currently halfway through negotiations with BSkyB, a deal that would make the facility one of the recommended HD subtitling suppliers to the satellite broadcaster. Bird said: "There's no specific equipment or software where you can do HD subtitling at the moment, but we've found a way around it."

He would not reveal the method as "it would be a bit ridiculous to point out how to do it to everyone before we can get the Sky contract signed".

IBF is also launching a DVD authoring and video on demand encoding business, The Garden, next month.
