BBC viewers will be able to programme their computers to download TV shows using their mobile phones, through new technology being trialled by the corporation.

The Stapler project will use special barcodes on posters and adverts, which can be snapped with a mobile phone camera. The phone will then instantly call up extra information on the programme, and automatically send it to computers, PDAs and interactive TV sets.

The project will be trialled as part of the BBC's interactive Media Player trial in September, which will give 5,000 people the tools to download BBC programmes onto their computers and keep them for up to seven days after they are broadcast

"We're looking five years ahead," said the BBC's internet controller, Tony Ageh, "but most of the technology already exists."
