Screen Subtitling Systems owner SDI Media is working with Sony’s Creative Software division on a project to come up with a standard way of placing subtitles into 3D movies and TV.

Following joint development work, SDI has had its suggested XML schema added to Sony’s Z-Depth 3D subtitle editing application.

The schema allows for the subtitle placement work that has been done early on in the production process to be repurposed further down the line.

Sony’s Z-Depth creates the information needed for proper placement of subtitles in the 3D part of a 3D Blu-Ray disc.

SDI global chief technology officer Scott Rose said: “Placed correctly, 3D subtitles play a vital part in enhancing the viewing experience. We are confident that a collaborative approach between industry participants will allow us
to establish a set of best practices.”
