Ed Roe and Jack Lothian - both 29 - are on a five-strong shortlist that also includes Susan Nickson who penned Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps.

Meanwhile, BBC Resources, the awards' sponsor, will present a special award to commemorate three years of association with the initiative. The judges' award for outstanding achievement will reward an overall winner with a dedicated BBC training course.

The award will be judged by BBC1 controller Lorraine Heggessey, BBC3 controller Stuart Murphy, CBBC controller Dorothy Prior and Mike Southgate, managing director of BBC Resources.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the London Hammersmith Palais on 19 May.
