Virgin Media content chief Malcolm Wall has admitted that bandwidth constraints will delay the launch of linear high definition channels on the cable giant’s TV service.

Speaking to Media Week, Wall said Virgin Media was planning to launch more linear HD channels, but conceded that the bandwidth constraints were an issue.

“We have enhanced head ends for HD channels,” he said. “But the main focus with HD is [video on demand] and it’s our belief there is an appetite for HD film.”

However, Wall added that Virgin Media planned to add more HD channels “on a selective basis" to complement the BBC HD channel on the platform.
