Toni & Guy hair salons around the country are set to receive their own satellite TV service thanks to a joint-venture set up by Johnny Vaughan's Worlds End Productions and Avanti Communications, writes Barbara Marshall.

Toni & Guy TV will initially feature 20 hours of content from Worlds End, including music, fashion, travel and product promotions. It will also be used for corporate and training purposes.

The joint-venture company, Connect TV, uses broadband satellite technology and local storage devices in-store to deliver the service which is due to launch in the UK next month, with plans for European roll-out. Trials are currently underway.

Avanti first developed the technology two years ago when it worked with the European Space Agency on the Abaris project in which music videos were delivered to consumers' computers by satellite. Last year, Avanti worked with the British National Space Centre to trial broadband internet access by satellite and, as a result, was the first company in the UK to provide internet access by satellite at speeds of up to 2 megabits per second.
