Japan’s NHK has begun broadcasting an 8K Super Hi-Vision satellite service that includes coverage from the Rio Olympics.

The test channel is showing a mix of 8K programming and up-converted 4K content.

The aim is to popularise 8K before Japan hosts the 2020 Olympics. The 8K Super Hi-Vision service provides pictures at 7,680 x 4,320 pixels, which is 16 times the resolution of HD.

The 8K content is also being shown in Rio, where experimental terrestrial transmissions are being conducted.

NHK and the BBC previously provided 8K coverage of the London 2012 Olympics
