Brief With an inferno at the core of the rail disaster, the programme required significant fire and smoke FX to reflect the scale of the tragedy. It also had to be achieved within the constraints of a factual budget and set up on location in one day, said Finestripe Productions producer and director Ian Lilley.

How it was done Artem’s SFX team installed fire-effect rigs and smoke equipment in the set-build of wreckage, destroyed train carriages and scorched debris on location at Bo’Ness and Kinneil, Scotland’s heritage railway and museum. Fireballs, raging infernos, close-up flame and smoke effects were all used to recreate the horror of the scene
