The Norwegian comedy entertainment format Nation’s Dumbest could be heading to BBC1 with Alan Carr as its host, Broadcast understands.

It is understood BBC Studios has shot a non-TX pilot of the gameshow with the Celebrity Traitors star wrangling a group of celebrities as they compete in a series of physical and mental rounds. Their aim is to get themselves eliminated and avoid being crowned the ‘nation’s dumbest’.

BBCS owns the rights to the format, which was originally produced by Norway’s Montreux Film and Fjernsyn with the title Norges Dummeste (Norway’s Dumbest), landing on TV2 in August 2024. It became the most-watched show on TV2 in Norway and was quickly renewed for a second season, which aired this year.

It has already landed adaptations in the US (Fox), Sweden (TV4), France (TF1), Germany (ProSieben) and Finland (MTV3). BBC Studios is producing all the adaptations except for the Finnish version, which will hail from Fremantle Media Finland.

Carr – an instant fan favourite on The Celebrity Traitors – already presents BBC1 quiz show Alan Carr’s Picture Slam, design competition Interior Design Masters and DIY returner Alan & Amanda.

He is due to present a Channel 4 series in the same ballpark, with him and Susie Dent testing the nation’s brainpower in Britain’s Secret Genius.

The BBC declined to comment.
