Outside broadcast firm NEP Cymru is set to trial a new camera setup at the Quiksilver Pro France surfing contest that begins today.

NEP Cymru, together with Broadcast Sports Inc, has developed what it describes as the first camera to deliver live pictures from the barrel of a wave.

A surfing cameraman will use a stripped down mini HD camera in a waterproof tube to capture 720p images that will be radio linked to the production’s media village and upscaled to 1080i.

The Cardiff-based OB firm said it has also reduced the time it takes to de-rig an OB and move to a new location to 1.5 hours so it can shoot at up to three locations a day as the surfing competition moves across a six mile stretch of the Landes coast north of Biarritz.

NEP Cymru managing director Tony Cahalane said: “As live world sports events go this is major league so it’s very exciting for us to be chosen as host broadcaster, alongside the excellent production team, fellow Welsh company Boomerang.”

Live coverage of the event will be streamed on the Quicksilver website with highlights to be shown on Eurosport.
