Sony used Cine Gear Expo in LA to provide early details of a new CineAlta camera system that is currently under development.

The digital motion picture camera system currently has no name but is expected to include a bespoke full frame 36x24mm sensor.

It will also be “aspect ratio-agnostic”, featuring options for full frame, Super35 4K 4-perf 4:3 Anamorphic and 4K spherical 3-perf 17:9.

The company said it is designing the camera from the ‘ground up’ rather then re-imagining or re-engineering a current camera.

The camera will, however, be compatible with current hardware accessories, including OLED viewfinders and card readers, while the workflow will include Sony’s 16bit RAW/X-OCN and XAVC.

No release date or pricing details were available.
